Why do the gasket color and engine block type matter?

Aluminum and cast iron have different coefficients of thermal expansion. A black gasket designed for an aluminum block is made from a special, softer, or graphitized compound with a specific coating. This allows it to accommodate the movement of the cylinder head relative to the aluminum block during heating and prevents micro-leaks. Installing a white gasket (intended for a cast-iron block) on an aluminum block is strongly discouraged; it is too rigid and would quickly burn through or damage the block's mating surface.
